If you are interested in your local community and its past, The Friends of Luton Museums invite you to join them, and to help keep some of that past for present and future generations. Luton is very lucky to have two completely different museums, each one reflecting the town’s past and industrial heritage.
Wardown House Museum and Gallery is the custodian of Luton’s hat and lace trade, each collection is of national and even international importance. Stockwood Discovery Centre houses one of the country’s largest collections of vintage horse drawn carriages. In its collection it has an Aveling and Porter tandem steamroller, believed to be one of only two known left in the world, the second one is in Australia. The “Improvement Garden” designed by the late Hamilton Finlay, a Scottish poet, writer artist and gardener; he took his inspirations for his garden designs from French Romantic paintings, and classic Greek sculpture. His garden at Stockwood is one of the largest he designed with the exception of his own five acre garden at Little Sparta in Scotland.
The Friends activities include meeting once a month, normally the second Wednesday of each month, we meet in the function room of the Luton and Indian Cricket Club; which is adjacent to Wardown House Museum. Meetings start at 10 am prompt and finish at 12 noon; members are entertained by a talk, usually with a local connection. Meetings end with a complimentary cup of coffee or tea and a biscuit. In July the Friends organize a coach outing to somewhere of interest, August we have a trip to a local place of historical interest.
Some members volunteer their services to the museums; this is arranged through the museum curator. The Friends of Luton Museums invite you to join them to help keep Luton’s past in the present.
